185 – Animal Omens – Possums

Possums

This series discusses animal omens. Many humans tend to kill what they consider to be unwanted intruders, such as spiders and the like, when they come into their home, but I would suggest thinking carefully before doing that. They may be there to give a message to you. I’ve had quite a few such omens appear in my life. This entry discusses an experience I had with an Australian Possum.

Dangerous Time

This incident is something that occurred back in 1996. It is recounted in my autobiography, I Am The Phoenix, and was part of a much larger sequence of events.

After doing a little more research about possums, I discovered that there may have been another message that was being conveyed to me, that I will discuss later.

The first few months of 1996 were especially intense in my life. Things were coming to a head in regard to a bet I had made. (Recounted in this entry.)

This was a particularly dangerous time in my life, as I had no idea what I was really up against, nor did I have any clue how much was at stake.

Mind you, it seems that all times in my life are dangerous. It seems that it’s just a matter of time before the next salvo is fired at me. But, whatever.

The Face

The incident that occurred happened just before I was about to go out for the evening. (I had agreed to attend a group meditation thing.)

It was dark by the time I was ready to leave, and I went down to my computer room to pick up something.

This room was separate from the house. It had once just been “under” the house but had been renovated into a living space. At the time, the only way to get in was to enter through a wooden door that had a large window in it. Curtains were hung over the window, to provide some privacy.

As I was about to enter the room, I noticed that the curtains appeared to be moving, as if they were being blown by the wind. But I knew that was impossible as there was nowhere for wind to occur.

I took a closer look, and my heart almost skipped a beat. I found myself staring at a small, misshapen face.

Baby

At first, I thought someone was in my room, and was acting in a deranged manner. But I stood my ground, and took out my pocket torch, and shone it on the face.

It turned out to be a possum. A baby one at that. How one had found its way into my room, which was sealed up tight, was a real mystery.

I entered the room and turned on the lights. It was hanging onto the curtains. I considered if I should do something, but realized I ran the risk of it biting me if I tried to remove it.

Also, I had no time to mess around with this, as I did not wish to be late.

I decided I would deal with it after I came back so I left it clinging to my curtains.

Resting

Later, when I got back home, I went down to the computer room, and found that the possum had moved.

It didn’t take long for me to locate it. It was snuggling next to my computer case, resting just on my mouse cord, and looking as cute and as peaceful as it could.

I booted up my P.C., and logged onto the net and an IRC chatroom that I used to frequent. (I experienced net addiction for a year after I discovered that you could chat in real time. It was still very new and unique for me in those days.)

Even after using my mouse and typing away with my friends, the possum did not move.

I asked the chatroom what I should do. All I got was lots of laughter, and incredulous comments. They hardly believed me. As cams and smartphones were not a thing back then, I could not show proof.

After half an hour, I decided that I couldn’t leave the possum where it was because I was afraid it might starve. (But on reflection, I’m certain it would have been fine.)

It was still resting against the case, and I felt I needed to free it. So, I emptied a tissue box, put my mouse mat underneath, and put the box on top. It hardly resisted! I quickly took it outside and set it free.

Meanings

Thinking back, I wonder if I should have just left it alone. It did not seem to deem me as any threat, and indeed, seemed to be quite comfortable in my presence.

I now know it was more than just some wild animal. It was clearly a spirit message for me. I just lacked the understanding for what it really meant at the time.

I was told that the possum represented my inner child. This may have been so (and if true, it was certainly a very timely synchronicity. It does certainly appear to represent change and growth.)

The other meaning that I found was (and I can’t find a link to cite it), is as follows:

What does it mean when a possum comes to your house?

A possum encounter may be a sign that you need to protect yourself and your family against bad energy or bad people who want to take advantage of you in some way. Spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation can sometimes provide significant protection.

This described my pending situation perfectly. (Though I had no clue it was coming, at the time.)

Prayer and meditation were a big part of my defences during the coming weeks.

In Conclusion

Spirit and animal totems are very significant and important events in one’s life.

Should you be blessed to experience such an occurrence, do not dismiss, or ignore it.

It will not only deepen your connection with nature and spirit but provide timely warnings and direction for your current life and situation.
